Max Ernst

With Max Ernst
Ever since doing a report on him at the University of Montana in 1999 I've been a fan of Max Ernst.  Whenever we museum, I look out for him and especially enjoy his sculpture.  Today we went to the Max Ernst museum in Bruhl and it is certainly world class.  The space is wonderful, the collection varied and exciting and the folks who run it are nice and docent in a professional and space-giving way (see yesterday's entry for background).  Wonderful stuff.  The highlight was a series of paintings he did for his eventual wife Dorothea Tanning who was an American Painter.  He did a painting for her each year since 1943 or so until the early '70's.  They all had a "D" somewhere on the canvas and truly spanned a whole mess of his various styles and interests.

In the morning we went to the Sea Life Museum.  We could have skipped this and not been worse for it.  Lots of brown fish swimming around treasure chests and sunken swords.  There was some strange New Age theme happening and there were some mermaids and nymphs represented as well.  We did have a nice lunch along the Rhine - good time.

Xyla waiting for the train in Bonn.
In the evening we had a dinner of Pad Thai after taking a small walk on the shopping street near our apartment.  The weather is beautiful and tomorrow promises to be hot, hot, hot.  I tried to see about renting some bikes for us, but as this isn't the Netherlands - no go.  We will try, instead, to get a boat and go for a ride on the Rhine.  We'll see.
