Little Moreton Hall - 5/8

The clouds rolled in Sunday morning leaving us to wonder what to do on the day.  Around noon, things looked pretty good - only 20 percent chance of rain for the rest of the day.  Twenty is nearly zero so we set out for a National Trust property a half hour south of our house, Little Moreton Hall.  Our time there started with a walk over farmland to the Macclesfield Canal where we had lunch.

Little Moreton Hall is a 16th Century Tutor building within which nothing is square and everything is wavy and undulating.  It is amazing that the thing is still standing.  The place was full of volunteers helping people learn about hygiene and bathroom etiquette.  It was clear from their efforts that herbs were an important part of making life bearable.  With urine and cow poop being used for everything from washing clothes to making wall and floor surfaces, life must have been stinky - and that is without considering the way that waste was discarded, if throwing everything in the moat can be called discarding.

The National Trust continues to impress and Little Moreton Hall is certainly a feather in their cap.
